MID-CENTURY MODERN PAINTINGS FOR THIS HARI RAYA SEASON!

5/30/2018

There is something about Hari Raya that uplifts the spirits of just about anyone. Perhaps it is being around the people that we love. Perhaps it is coming home to the yummy, mouth-watering ketupat and rendang dishes and kuih tart that your mom has prepared for you. Perhaps it is visiting and rekindling old relations. There is just something about Hari Raya that fills the heart with an incredible sense of joy. And what better way to express joy than through colour! You can definitely find me decked to the nines in a quirky yet elegant bright fuchsia or canary yellow kebaya this Hari Raya.

Speaking of colour, Hari Raya is absolutely, 100 percent the best time to re-decorate your home and add some splash of vibrancy to your living space. I mean people are coming to visit you and the living room is definitely the focal point of the house during this festival. I for one absolutely love visiting some of my relatives’ homes, not only because they serve one of the best lemang in Malaysia or beef rendang in Singapore, but I also sometimes get inspiration from the way they style their living spaces.

Here are 8 mid-century inspirations for you to create a statement in your living space and also tips on how you can style your interior space that will have any guest awestruck and make them feel like they have just visited a home fit for the cover of any interior design magazine celebrating the wonderful joy that is Hari Raya.

1. ADD A POP OF COLOUR

Nothing says joy like colour! Adding a colourful and bright painting instantly jazzes up any dull room and is a great way to ring in the month-long Festival.

2. AN ELEGANT TOUCH

Mount your painting in a sleek black frame for a more finished and modern look. Amp up the style of your painting further by adding a simple border!

3. LUXURIOUS TEXTURE

Drape a faux fur throw around your dining table or chairs for a polished
and effortless glam look.

4. MATCHY-MATCHY

Choose furniture which colour palette complement that of the painting. The chairs, sofas or even pillows should play off one or two colours from the painting. Make sure that the furniture does not takeaway the focus from the painting though. A safe bet is to use paler colours from the painting.

5. LET YOUR QUIRKY PERSONALITY LOOSE

A great way to inject fun in your living room is by incorporating part of your personality in the space. Express your celebratory mood by displaying loose items such as a stack of Hari Raya magazines or a quirky box filled with the green Hari Raya packets.

6. WHITE BORDER

Consider adding a white border for your frame to add more attention to your beautiful paintings.

7. HARI RAYA GREEN

Adding indoor plants is the best way to make a home feel welcoming. Not to mention, it helps purify the air from all the rendang and sambal udang smells. A pop of green also pays further tribute to the Hari Raya Festival. I mean green is the official colour for Hari Raya, right?

8. SETTING THE MOOD

And finally, nothing says welcome than the warm flickering of scented candles. Place one, two or a tray of candles of differing heights by your coffee table to set a whimsical and intimate mood making any guest feel right at home in your space.

I hope these tips have revved you up for the festive mood. I am pretty sure you will spend every second decorating your home in jubilant anticipation for Hari Raya.
