Humans all have a strong need for safety, security, and psychological comfort in our homes. With the current situation that the world is going through, spending our time at home 24/7 still feels surreal and we wonder how the pandemic will change our lifestyle and whether we will return to our old normal.
Confined to our nest, we are also more conscious of the space we share and the limitations of our homes. In this blog, I discussed with Malaysian lifestyle designer, architect and interior stylist on how COVID-19 will impact or has impacted our homes, and what we can do immediately to make our home more pleasant and comfortable to live in.

Now more than ever, our homes, our “Sanctuary” has been elevated to perform a myriad of functions. Following the coronavirus outbreak, we have turned our homes into a place to work, a place to homeschool, a place to play in, a place to continue to exercise in, a place to dine, a place of relaxation, a place to sleep and recharge, a place to find inspiration and most importantly a place of solitude as well.
With this, the designs of homes hereafter will change. Priorities and emphasis will be given to making simple spaces function more than a single use. A dining table will have more uses than just a dining experience.

Other valuable ideas that will grow with the new evolution of home designs and also improving its environmental aspects are home grown farming, increasing home plants, energy saving utilities (ac/washing machine, dryer, fan, cooking equipments, etc) emphasis on air circulation, daylight and internet access design, investing in multi-use sofas, comfortable and easy cleaning rugs, and much much more. A house is no longer just a shelter to come home to after a long day’s work but has now been elevated to be the center of ALL activities in your life.

We’ll probably never see our homes in the same light again.
Versatile and multifunctional spaces are more necessary now that we are spending more time at home. From working, having meetings, and exercising, it seems more important now to create a space just to do this specific activity.
Working from home is the new normal, and a trend moving forward. Find a space in your home that is dedicated and designated mainly just for work. Working from your sofa or bed can create mental distress and your work productivity will suffer, so set up a desk and chair to separate your professional life from the personal.

One of the things that you can immediately do during this pandemic is to declutter your space. We focused so much on the aesthetic, that we often overlooked the fact that having a beautiful home always starts from the internal.
Research has shown that clutter in the house can lead to anxiety and anger issues that can stress you out. Decluttering is a way for you to take control of your home and life. It helps to improve your overall well being and can help to improve your health and happiness.
The best way is to start small, focus on each area of a room, and completing it fully before moving on to the next.
